Retrospectieve René Magritte moves from Paris to Frankfurt
Early next year the expo "Rene Magritte - The treachery of images" moves from Paris to Frankfurt. The exhibition runs until January 23 at the Centre Pompidou and from February 10 to June 5 shown in the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.
The exhibition, based on seventy works, researches the ratio of the Belgian surrealist to the philosophical movements of his time. "The treachery of images" in Frankfurt will both consist of less known and very popular works of Magritte. The works all date from the period 1920-1960. Included are the self-portrait "La lampe philosophique" (philosophical lamp - 1936) and "La condition humaine" (The fate of humanity - 1948).
"Great exhibitions devoted to Magritte are rare. Therefore I am all the more pleased to bring his first major solo exhibition in Germany in over twenty years. Visitors can expect an exhibition that highlights Magritte's familiar style in the context of the philosophical discourse of his time. An experience for both the eye and the mind," says Philipp Demandt, director of the Schirn Kunsthalle.
