Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

museum for modern and contemporary art and design

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is an important museum of modern and contemporary art and design. It was founded in 1874 and first opened on Paulus Potter Street. Since 2012 the museum is located on the Museumplein in Amsterdam South, where the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are located.

During the last century the Museum was internationally regarded as one of the most influential museums of twentieth-century art. Since 1909 the collecting area was ‚Äč‚Äčcontemporary art and later photography and design. The collection was built up over the years always from a contemporary and progressive approach. There were key exhibitions of the most important artists and groups, often at keymoments in art history.

Current policy focuses on a mix of classic and modern signaling presentations. The organisation uses a quote from Bertolt Brecht: "It is democratic to make a large circle of connoisseurs out of a small circle of connoisseurs."
